The artists invited to the Festival des Chairs Fraîches in the cellars of the Anderlecht Abattoirs were brought to create for the occasion graphic works and installations on the theme of slaughterhouses, a theme that weaves a link between the primary purpose of the site and the evocations he evokes in the imagination. Because if the Abattoirs refer obviously to the question of the evolution of human practices, logical and rational, these slaughterhouses also refer to our own mortality, our own fears, and our own essence. This cutting of animal flesh can never be completely Other, impersonal and absolutely detached from our human condition, because this animal flesh is precisely what defines us entirely: our small, intimate, mysterious and fundamentally perishable machinery. The flesh is our unsurpassable horizon, and its cutting an irrevocably singular act.
